About Artemisia Unfiltered
I'm Artemisia, named after a goddess known for never missing her mark, and I've been working toward that standard with a camera for the past five years.
Why I built this
When I was starting out, the information existed but finding it meant wading through hour-long YouTube videos to answer a one-sentence question, forum threads from 2009 with seventeen conflicting opinions, and articles that spent fifteen hundred words saying what could have been two sentences. I wanted one place with everything in it — the calculators I kept having to Google, the guides that got to the point, the references I could come back to without starting from scratch every time.
I built the site I wished had existed, and I try to keep it the way I would have wanted it: honest, direct, and free.
What this site is
Artemisia Unfiltered is a photography utility and guide site built around the questions photographers actually search for: camera settings for specific situations, focal length comparisons, how calculators work in practice, and why certain technical choices matter.
The "unfiltered" part is intentional — practical information without the padding, vague recommendations, or sponsored placement that fills most photography content. My name is my name. The site just follows the same standard.

- Camera Settings Guides — Practical guides for specific shooting situations: outdoor portraits, indoor photography, low light, manual mode basics, and the exposure triangle explained clearly.
- Lens Guides — Focal length comparisons (35mm vs. 50mm, 50mm vs. 85mm), prime vs. zoom trade-offs, and help choosing a first lens by shooting style.
- Beginner Photography Fundamentals — Aperture, ISO, shutter speed, and composition explained in plain language. Not dumbed down, but not unnecessarily technical either.
- Editing Workflow — Lightroom basics, file organization, and export settings for web and social media.
How I write
Length follows the question
Guides are as long as they need to be and no longer. If a question has a two-sentence answer, two sentences is the guide. I'm not here to keep you on the page — I'm here to give you what you came for and let you go use it.
Affiliate links are disclosed, always
If affiliate links are present, they're disclosed on every page that contains them and in the Affiliate Disclosure. What I recommend is based on how something performs, not on what pays a commission.
Gear is described, not sold
When I write about equipment, I focus on objective properties — focal length, aperture range, format compatibility — and keep comparative claims to what specifications actually show. I'm not a review site and I don't write like one.
The calculators use real formulas
Every calculator on this site uses standard optical formulas, not simplified approximations. Results are still estimates — real-world performance varies by lens design, focus accuracy, and shooting conditions — and each calculator says so plainly.
Guides get updated
When information becomes outdated, when a section keeps generating the same confused questions, or when new camera technology changes what the practical answer actually is, I update the guide. The date is on every page.
What this site isn't
- Not a review site — individual products aren't reviewed or scored here
- Not a personal blog — no travel diaries, no opinion pieces, no "here's what I've been up to"
- Not a paid platform — no subscriptions, no paywalled content, not ever
- Not a beginner trap — the guides work at beginner level but don't condescend to anyone past it
Errors and corrections
If you find a mistake in a calculator, a factual error in a guide, or a broken page, use the contact page. Corrections come first. If something is wrong, I fix it.
